A child who speaks a dialect very different from your own can be challenging. Remember that these differences are NOT a sign of intelligence: the child has learned what is heard from other adults and children they spend time with.

You can be particularly valuable in pointing out differences from the standard 'school' dialect and ask the child to make his/her own observations. |

Talk to the child about differences you observe between the way the child uses language and the way you do.
