Online Encyclopedias

The center does not subscribe to any encyclopedias, but there are several free ones online. The disadvantage of the free encyclopedias are that they might have limited coverage or include a advertizing. Still there are some very good resources available for free (see the Net Links below).

Both software and online versions have the advantage of speed of finding things over books, which also makes it easier to branch to related topics during the short time we have while tutoring.
The software version is always there, whether or not the internet connection is working, and may show a speedier response time, since the connection is very local.
The online versions have the potential for showing much more information (though you have to be careful of the source and beware of advertizing) and are available on any machine connected to the internet.
It's True! We should check with the library to see if we can have access to any encylopedic resources they may have.

Tip Most kids will not be ready for all of the steps in the Try This. Review the materials to see what might be useful for use with the children you tutor.
