Book encylopedias compared to online versions have many of the same advantages and disadvantages relative to dictionary in book versus computer form (books don't have to be booted up and we know how to use them but they are a little harder to find things quickly).
[ if there is an encyclopedia (or more) in the center it (they) should be documented here...]
| You might use an encyclopedia of any type (book, software or online) just to find the right photo to explain a concept (this works well for plants, animals and other concrete nouns likely to be illustrated).
| You might also use a children's encyclopedia to start to talk about reference materials and how to use them.
| You can also use an encyclopedia to look up material of interest to the child.
| More advanced children can also use the encyclopedia for small research projects.
